Celebrate Tu BiShvat with ShalomLearning and Jewish National Fund-USA!
ShalomLearning, the leaders in innovative K-7 Jewish education serving almost 18,000 students worldwide, and Jewish National Fund-USA have teamed up again to create engaging lesson plans for your 3rd-6th grade students to learn about and celebrate Tu BiShvat 5784.
Lessons for Grades 3 and 4
Learners will first understand the meaning of Tu BiShvat ט״וּ בִּשְׁבָט and its role as one of the four new years celebrated in the cycle of the Jewish year. Students will be introduced to the themes, customs, and celebrations of the holiday and understand how it is connected to the land of Israel. They will also begin to consider ways we can all contribute to supporting trees and the earth.
Students will be introduced to Jewish texts related to water and their importance in Judaism, providing a background for understanding the critical importance of water conservation to sustain all living things—including people and trees.
Lessons for Grades 5 and 6
Students will learn, through the exploration of the Seven Species of the Land of Israel שִׁבְעַת הַמִּינִים, that Tu BiShvat ט״וּ בְּשְׁבָט highlights the deep connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל. They are connected through their shared themes of agriculture, spiritual symbolic meanings, and a focus on the natural world.
Tu BiShvat ט״וּ בְּשְׁבָט is a time to reflect on the beauty and significance of the land’s natural resources, including the fruits and grains that have sustained generations of people. The Seven Species שִׁבְעַת הַמִּינִים and the holiday of Tu BiShvat ט״וּ בְּשְׁבָט have evolved over time to include a focus on environmental awareness and conservation for the world.
These lessons include activities and a variety of media, including video links and Google slides. Download the free lesson plans through the form below.
